The Company: Grossman Medical Group Company
Founder of the Prestigious Grossman Burn Center in Sherman Oaks, CA, A. Richard Grossman, and his son, Peter H. Grossman are among the most respected and well recognized specialists in burn and wound care in the world. The Grossman Medical Group Inc. emphasizes the science and skill of reconstructive surgery with the artistry of aesthetic surgery to achieve the optimal cosmetic result, while maximizing patient safety.
The Situation
Prior to this project, Grossman Medical Group had a reliable infrastructure maintained by Cal Net that worked for them, but they wanted a technology update to Small Business Server 2003 so they could take advantage of greater Internet and Network-related features. In short, the client wanted remote access to individual workstations, shared faxing, a Share Point workspace for team collaboration and full use of all Microsoft Outlook features to their Exchange Server from remote access points.
Their Small Business Server 2000 could handle many of their needs, but Small Business Server 2003 was required to bring other desired features that were dependent on new technologies, specifically Remote Web Workplace and Outlook connection to Exchange via RPC over HTTP.
The Solution
Over the course of 10 days, Cal Net implemented Small Business Server 2003. The server was upgraded within a day and Cal Net integrated it into the existing network over the next week. To ensure reliable operation of the new server operating system, Cal Net installed new versions of Symantec Antivirus and Veritas Backup Exec that were certified for use with SBS 2003. SBS 2003 Fax Server was implemented, giving users Faxing capabilities right from their desktops. Remote Web Workplace was also implemented, giving users access to their desktops and all other business-critical data from remote locations. With Exchange Server 2003 and Outlook 2003, Cal Net was able to configure full function connectivity from Outlook 2003 to the Exchange Server from remote locations by using the RPC over HTTP protocol. Finally, a group collaboration website was made available via implementation of Share Point Team Services, included with SBS 2003.
With the implementation of this project, the client gained enough remote access capability to be able to operate from the office or any other location with an Internet connection. Their employees are now able to remain productive, regardless of location or time of day.
Why Grossman Medical Group chose Cal Net Technology Group
Back in 2000, the office manager at Grossman Medical Group ran across our ad in the San Fernando Valley Business Journal. According to them, it was one of the best calls they had ever made. Cal Net has now seen several “renditions” of the Grossman network environment, as we have been engaged with them for 6 years, providing end-to-end I.T. support.
The Company :JBP
The present firm results from the growth of an accounting practice started in Pasadena in 1960. Jenkins, Bowler, & Perkins is, and always has been committed to providing their clients with superior and relevant accounting, auditing and tax services. They place a high degree of emphasis on responsiveness and accessibility. Jenkins, Bowler, & Perkins realizes that their success is directly dependent upon the success of their clients.
The Situation
Jenkins, Bowler, & Perkin’s had substantial concerns with their network infrastructure and application use. Their old Compaq/Windows 2000 server’s disk drive capacity had outgrown their tape backup capacity. In terms of application use, they had limited remote access to applications. They also used MS Exchange 2000 for in-house e-mail, but needed better usability in getting their e-mail from remote locations.
JBP was due for a technology “overhaul” to address capacity issues and further enhance the productivity of their staff.
The Solution
To give the Jenkins, Bowler, & Perkins the technology update they needed and stay within a reasonable budget, Small Business Server 2003 was the perfect solution. Cal Net implemented a Dell Power Edge 2600 Server, running redundant power supplies, a RAID-5 disk array and a DLT tape backup solution that more than addressed disk capacity.
Exchange Server was implemented, integrating in-house and public e-mail. Veritas Backup Exec was installed and configured for unattended backup, using a media rotation designed for weekly archiving of data. Remote Web Workplace and Outlook Web Access were configured to provide easy to use remote access to applications and e-mail to their users, regardless of their location.
With this implementation, all of the client’s infrastructure and user issues were addressed. Server availability was increased with added redundant equipment (power and disk), while unplanned downtime was virtually eliminated via preventative maintenance of their network and systems. IT spending was reduced and user productivity was enhanced by more acute remote access to applications and e-mail/groupware, which allowed employees to work better and faster than before from any PC with an Internet connection. In a nutshell, this solution gave their employees even more of their time to focus on operating their business, and less time worrying about I.T.
Why Jenkins, Bowler, & Perkins chose Cal Net Technology Group
As with many of Cal Net Technology Group’s clients, Jenkins, Bowler & Perkins was a referral from another accounting firm with whom we were, and still are, doing business. Because of the exceptional technical skills in addition to our unmatched attention to client service, when Jenkins, Bowler, & Perkins expressed the need for I.T. support, their business associates from a close by firm was eager to say, “Call Cal Net, they will take good care of you.”

The Company: Trojan Rivet Corporation
Throughout the modern history of rivet manufacturing, Trojan Rivet Corporation set standard for the industry, by harnessing cold heading technology, innovation, resources, productivity and commitment to after-sale support. Dedicated to service and quality products since early 1950, Trojan Rivet continues to lead the way as the first manufacturer of industrial and automotive semi-tubular rivets on the West Coast.
The Situation
Before Cal Net was engaged, Trojan Rivet was running a Windows 2000 Server for file, print and application services. The server, which carried the company’s mission-critical data, had no operational redundancy and insufficient means of data backup. Trojan was using an outsourced e-mail host, accessed over POP3 connections. The immediate business requirements identified were a need for mission-critical data integrity and data disaster recovery. Additional requirements included the need for centralized office-wide scheduling, task management and contact management. Remote access to e-mail was also a desired feature.
The Solution
The best low-cost solution to address these requirements was Small Business Server 2003. Over a 6 day period, Cal Net installed a new server, loaded with SBS 2003. The server features a UPS battery backup to safely shut down the server in the event of power loss, Raid-5 disk redundancy to keep the server running should a disk drive fail, and an automated Veritas Backup Exec-based tape backup solution to provide data recovery in the event of a data disaster.
Employee work resides on this server, therefore adding strong protection of this mission-critical data. Exchange 2003 was implemented to provide centralized e-mail, scheduling, and task and contact management. The existing Windows 2000 server was added to the SBS 2003 domain and is now leveraged as a terminal server proxy for remote access to their desktops. Outlook Web Access was implemented to give remote access to all e-mail/groupware functions. Moreover, Active Directory Group Policies were leveraged in order to keep users away from system functions that have no value in relation to their job duties.
Trojan Rivet is now assured that their data is safe and their employees can be more productive because much manual process time has been eliminated by centralized groupware and application availability has been increased via remote access.
Why Trojan Rivet chose Cal Net Technology Group
Though Cal Net Technology Group was not the only organization interviewed when it came time for Trojan Rivet to address their I.T. needs, Cal Net was successful not only in winning the business, but implementing a solution that perfectly met their needs. Because Trojan Rivet doesn’t have the need or the budget for a full time I.T. department, they have relied on Cal Net for all of their I.T. needs for the past few years.
